District 1 school funding secured

Times staff report

Carbon County School District 1 administrators wiped their brows a week ago when Superintendent Peggy Sanders returned to Rawlins from Cheyenne to report that the district’s building funds for a new elementary complex in Highland Hills were secure.

Administrators from Goshen County School District presented their case to the state House for renewed funding from the School Facilities Commission to continue work that extended beyond the previously allotted time.

That was in late February, and on the last day of the month, district officials from across the state awaited the final vote on the matter. District 1, low on the hierarchical list of funding from the School Facilities Commission, saw one of the biggest threats from the lobbying efforts.

“It died on the floor,” Sanders said of Goshen County’s bill. She didn’t know how the official vote was split, but was eager to report that construction would go forward for the Highland Hills complex.
